Automatic directing for team sports

Visicatch is an Android mobile app for team sports: two smartphones at the side of the court automatically film and direct matches (basketball, volleyball, futsal, football, handball) with a live scoreboard in the video, statistics, and live streaming to YouTube.

The idea

Whoever films a match does not watch it. With Visicatch two phones film it, and everyone goes back to watching.

That is the whole idea. The rest of the work is about making it run in a real gym, with whatever network is there.

The phone recognises players and ball.

What you need

Nothing more than what is already in your bag.

2

Android phones

Mid-range or better, ideally recent. One films the left half, the other the right half.

1

Tripod with a double mount

At the middle of the long side, a few metres back and as high as possible. The two phones sit side by side on the same mount.

0

Cables and computers

The phones talk over the gym's network or over the hotspot of one of them.

Step by step

From the team to the video, on a real phone.

What it does

From filming to the summary, with no editing.

Stats

The summary writes itself during the match.

One tap per action, from the directing phone or from a third phone. At the end of the match a box score, shot map and PDF; match after match, the season.

The stats, sport by sport

Who it is for

For people who would rather watch the match than hold the camera.

Families

The whole match, with the score, to watch again and send to the grandparents.

Players

Their own plays and season stats. Accounts from age 14.

Coaches

The match to review the next day, with the stats already done.

Clubs

Every team filmed and archived, without a volunteer behind the camera.

Plainly put

What it does today, and what it does not yet.

Today

  • It films and records without internet: the phones connect to each other.
  • Five sports, each with its own rules, scoreboard and stats.
  • PDF summary and season stats.
  • Even with a single phone: scoreboard in the video and stats, for small courts.
  • Live streaming and upload to YouTube and Facebook, being checked in the beta.
  • Sign in with Google or email and optional YouTube channel connection for live streams and uploads, adhering to Google Limited Use requirements. Policy §5.1

Not yet

  • The iPhone version.
  • The merged view, with the two shots in a single frame.
  • Recognising people is not planned: the app sees shapes and the ball, not faces or names.
